There is little doubt that Mother’s Day 2020 will be unlike any in recent memory. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, the family visits and dinners will be very different if they even happen at all. Many families may be planning to have a virtual Mother’s Day celebration to show honor and love to their matriarch as best as they can considering our current restrictions.

For those with mothers in nursing homes and senior care facilities, Mother’s Day will heighten the current anxiety and loss as many of these of these places have instituted tight rules limiting (or even banning altogether) any visitors. As the COVID-19 virus is especially dangerous in a group senior care setting, many sons and daughters may be unable to be in the same room with their mothers let only have any physical contact. Even normal social-distancing guidance may not be enough when looking at this vulnerable population.

Here are some suggested ways to consider celebrating mom this Mother’s Day:

  • Use the same virtual tools we are using to work and learn from home – Senior care workers should be able to assist your loved one with the needed technology to get on a Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime. While this is not a substitute for telling mom you love her in person, using a web-based solution will allow you both to hear and see each other. You should also be able to connect with others so multiple families can join with mom at the same time. Find ways to make mom feel special by signing a song, reading a poem, or playing a game! Make use of this unique time!

  • Dinner date with mom for Mother’s Day – Discuss your plans with the staff prior but you may be able to have a special meal sent to the facility at a specific time so you can still join mom for dinner. Many families will be using carry-out options this year so prepare well in advance to make this happen.

  • Picnic with mom – While mom may be in the senior care center, she may be able to see you through her window. Why not make some signs and show her how much you care? Enjoy your meal on the grass outside her window while she eats hers. Again, check with the facility prior to showing up unannounced.

  • Ship mom a gift – Mom may need things outside of the normal Mother’s Day gifts. Find out if she is lacking necessities. She is probably unable to get to the stores to shop for herself. If you are going to send flowers, make sure you do it early because flower delivery is expected to be a hot item for this Mother’s Day.

This list is certainly not exhaustive but it should help you put a smile on mom’s face! It is important to not only honor mom this year, but also make sure she is being well taken care of by the facility where she is staying. If you believe that your loved one’s rights are being violated in any way – mistreatment, overburden, abuse, or neglect – let us know and we will assist you and your family. Mom deserves to be celebrated every day of the year.

Happy Mother’s Day!
